5. Lake Constance, Austria/Germany/Switzerland
Do you know of any area in Europe where no borders exist? Well, one of them happens to be Lake Constance, nestled between Switzerland, Germany and Austria near the Alps. In the absence of any legally binding agreement, this fresh water lake remains a no man’s land. It stands today as a giant, squid-shaped freshwater lake, complete with several tentacles – Überlingersee or “upper lake,” Zellersee and Untersee or “lower lake.” The Rhine River feeds Untersee. This 63-kilometer (39-mile) long, 14-kilometer (8.7-mile) wide and 252-meter (827-foot) deep lake is the third largest in Europe.
