5. Mysterious city of Machu Picchu in Peru, South America
Offering an unparalleled cultural experience Machu Picchu is a mysterious 15th-century citadel built during the Incan empire. Sitting pretty on a mountain ridge at a staggering elevation of 2,430 meters above Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu is often referred to as Lost City of the Incas’.
The city was built for the Inca emperor Pachacuti to serve as his estate. UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu has been described as “an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization”. Constructed in classical Inca style with polished dry-stone walls, Machu Picchu was abandoned within a century at the time of Spanish conquest. Although it was located barely 80 km from the Inca capital, Spanish never knew about it, hence it was saved from destruction. With an air of mystery and grandeur, Machu Picchu is a unique cultural experience.
