3. Shoes on the Danube Bank
One of the most creative concepts for a unique war memorial, the Shoes on the Danube Bank was created by the sculptor Gyula Pauer in honor of the Jews who were asked to take off their shoes and stand at the edge of the river before being shot by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen during World War II. While the bodies of the victims fell into the river, their shoes were left behind. The idea of the one-of-its-kind war memorial was conceived by film director Can Togay. Don’t miss it when you visit Budapest.
