8. Upper Barrakka Gardens & Saluting Battery
Offering the most panoramic views of the Grand Harbor, Upper Barrakka Gardens are dated back to the 16th century. The gardens were once used for the recreational purposes for the knights of nearby Auberge d’Italie but were opened to the public in 1800. There are several memorials and historical monuments within the garden premises, however, the most striking is the Saluting Battery where the cannon was fired to salute the visiting naval vessels. Now, cannon firing is a daily ceremonial activity in the garden which is the most popular activity in the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
