2. Synyk-Kala Mosque
The Mohammed Mosque, known also as Synyk-Kala, is one of the most ancient buildings in the whole Azerbaijan. The name itself can be translated as “Destroyed Tower”. This is due to the fact that once a cannon ball destroyed the upper part of the minaret. Yet, the mosque survived and its minaret still reaches for the sky. Today, tours around the Synyk-Kala are allowed, but according to Muslim laws only men can enter it. Also, a particularity of this building is that it has a low vaulted arch, so that everyone who comes in bows his head in front of the divine power.
