6. Ross Castle
Though access to this 15th-century lakeside castle is by guided tour only; it is certainly worth a visit. Once the residence of the O’Donoghues, Ross Castle’s highlights are its defensive features which were typical of the houses of Irish chieftains during the Middle Ages. The staircase of the Ross Castle, in particular, is quite interesting as it is built in the clockwise direction to give the defenders an advantageous position.
