1. Castell’Arquato, Emilia-Romagna
Going to great lengths to be able to visit a castle might be cumbersome for some tourists, which is why we felt compelled to include the Castell’Arquato in our selection, as it is both a town and a fortification per se. The medieval town was built in the 10th century and was considered an important domination spot in the area as it was strategically constructed on a high rock.
The burg is a recurrent character in many motion pictures, and it has also made an appearance in an American fantasy adventure film, Ladyhawke. The castle’s archive holds an impressive collection of ancient music, so it is a must-see for musicology students.
