Adasino Nenbutsu-ji cemetery

Pass the unbelievable Arashiyama bamboo grove and head north to glance at the Adasino Nenbutsu-ji temple and cemetery. The temple grounds are filled with about 8000 Buddhist statues, each symbolizing an unknown or forgotten person. Although you may be amazed by the beauty of the site, the Japanese however ask for respect for this place, as most of them come to pray here. The place of worship becomes a real magical spot during the ‘sento kuyo’, a ceremony dedicated to the spirits of the dead, when over ten thousand stone statues are lit up with candles.
