7. Mashhad
Besides known as the second most populous city in Iran, the city of Mashhad is most famous for housing the tomb of Imam Reza. This sacred place is visited every year by millions of pilgrims to pay their tributes to the eighth Shia Imam. This, but also other religious sites, make Mashhad the second largest holy city in the world. The Imam Reza shrine is a complex that contains the Goharshad Mosque, a museum, a library, four seminaries, a cemetery, a university, a dining hall of pilgrims, vast prayer halls, and other buildings.
