What to Do in St. Petersburg in 3 Days

Day 3 in St. Petersburg

Start the last day of your 3-day trip in St. Petersburg on the Senatskaia Square. The square is enclosed by civil and religious governing bodies of pre-revolutionary Russia. In the center of it, an impressive monument to the founder of St. Petersburg, Peter the Great, is standing – the Bronze Horseman. The statue is compared with the Statue of Liberty from New York, because both of them are symbols of the city in which they are located and both monuments were built after the projects of some French artists.

Visit Saint Isaac’s Cathedral – the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city. Moreover, this is the largest Orthodox basilica and the fourth largest cathedral in the world. The church is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, the patron saint of Peter the Great who had been born on the feast day of this saint. This exclusive architectural structure, model of late Classicism, now has the status of museum. The building is decorated with various statues and bas-reliefs, but also 112 granite columns that form a very distinctive memorable facade. The entire cathedral is dominated by a huge golden dome.

Another very important tourist attraction from the center of St. Petersburg is the Admiralty building, which is situated at the intersection of three main boulevards. This was designed to serve the Navy of the city.

Quite often, St. Petersburg is called “the open-air museum of bridges”, as it is in the top of the list of cities with the biggest number of bridges. The city is sprawling over forty islands that are connected among them with more than 300 bridges. More than thirty of them are real masterpieces of architecture! There are many things which you cannot see at daylight, the main nocturnal attraction being the breeding bridges during White Nights. Those who were lucky enough to stroll along St. Petersburg’s quays during White Nights and admire the silhouettes of the bridges, will never forget the unique image of the Northern Venice!
