Day 2 in Frankfurt
Discover the modern Frankfurt!
We are used that museums are automatically connected to something old, or ancient. Well, it is not the case of the Museum fur Moderne Kunst, which is one of the world’s most important museums of contemporary art and that was established not more than two decades ago in the international museum scene. Once seeing the design of the building, which is similar to a slice of cake, you will immediately understand that it hosts something unusual. In its interior, the museum displays a collection of over 5.000 works of international art. The museum’s goal is to help visitors perceive the architecture thanks to the art, and vice versa.
Although Hauptwache (Guard House) is a not so modern place, the plaza is surrounded by numerous newly built skyscrapers. Yet, Hauptwache is one of the main plazas in Frankfurt. The baroque building of the Guard House is nowadays a nice cafe, so don’t miss the chance to have your lunch in a historical building. From 1730 till today, the Guard House was used for multiple purposes, including headquarters of the city’s militia and later a police station. Also, Hauptwache is a station that serves as one of the most important cross-points of the Frankfurt public transport system.
Closer to the sunset, head to the Main Tower – a newly built giant skyscraper of 200 meter height, whose construction was finalized in 2000. It is one of the main local attractions that is visited by about 300.000 tourists yearly. In order to admire the breathtaking panoramic view over Frankfurt at the sunset, you will have to climb up 56 levels. Don’t be panicked, of course you will not have to climb up stairs, at least if you do not want to do it. An elevator will lift you up in less than 1 minute, although it may create you a slight discomfort of clogging ears.
