4. Melrose Abbey
Once a monastery, the ruins of Melrose Abbey presents an exotic glimpse of the brilliant Gothic architecture. Famous around the world for its decorative stonework and statues, Melrose abbey is one of the most visited places in Scotland. The gorgeous carved work on the Abbey is not just beautiful but exquisite. The spectacular abbey founded in 1136, by David I for Cistercian monks, has 69 doors and equal number of windows, niches, and butts. The heart of Scotland’s national hero who had rebuilt the abbey—Robert the Bruce—is buried here.
