10. The Legendary Alcatraz Island
Located in the beautiful San Francisco Bay, the legendary Alcatraz Island is home to the notorious Alcatraz penitentiary. Having operated for nearly thirty years, it ended its life as a prison in 1963, only to re-open ten years later as a full-blown tourist attraction.
And speaking of attractions in San Francisco, Alcatraz is most definitely one of the well-known and notorious ones out there. It was the backdrop of countless movies in popular culture, and also had many famous inmates, one of the most talked about being Al Capone. You can tour the site after taking a ferry over to the island. A very interesting and exceptionally well put together audio tour is also available, which we definitely recommend.
