No list of the most iconic roads around the world would be complete without Australia’s best coastal drive – the Great Ocean Road. Just because it’s famous doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for your very own adventure down under – although, in summer, drive it mid-week rather than on a weekend, if you can, to avoid being part of a crowd.
It’s a 275-kilometer (171-mile) run, from Geelong to Warrnambool, and best done slowly, so you can savor every cliff-top view, stretch your legs during seaside walks and rainforest hikes, explore museums, browse boutiques and linger over long lunches in seaside cafes or fish and chips on the beach.
