2. Dunnottar Castle
Perched on a cliff-top site that’s been inhabited since Pictish times, Dunnottar Castle today, unfortunately, stands as only a shadow of its former self. What is today a ruined castle saw both Mary the Queen of Scots and William Wallace stay in it. What’s equally interesting is the fact that Dunnottar Castle is famous for yet another historically seldom-known fact. Namely, a small garrison held out at this very site against Cromwell’s troops for eight months in an effort to save the Scottish Crown Jewels. The Jewels are now on display in Edinburgh Castle.
