4. Duart Castle
For the last 400 years, this castle was considered the ancestral home of the Maclean clan. In the mid-14th century, it was actually passed to a Scottish chief as part of the dowry his bride had brought to the marriage. It sits perched upon a hill overlooking the Sound of Mull, and is easily one of the more picturesque fortifications on this list. Partially ruined in the 18th century, the present iteration was restored in 1911.
