Fancy Architecture, great and diverse restaurants, sunny climate and beautiful beaches have made Barcelona, within the few decades, one of the most popular cities and ports of Europe and, why not, of the world.
Like most cities on the Mediterranean, Barcelona was founded by the Romans. Initially called Barcino, it was a small port town located on the place of today’s cathedral.
Although they were invaded by the Visigoths and Moors, their influence was not as important as that of the Franks was. Traces invasions are felt mainly in Spanish / Catalan, which includes a lot of Arabic words. So Catalan is not a Spanish dialect, but a language related to other Roman languages.
