1. Mount Etna
It doesn’t get much more famous than this Colossus of the ancient world, does it? A puzzle that has tormented even the brightest of minds throughout the ages, Etna is today as mysterious as it was thousands of years ago. That’s part of the reason why it’s ranked among the top tourist attractions in Sicily. The other part is the fact that it’s an ever-changing wonder of nature. With more than 3,000 meters of sky-scraping height, its often-smoking cone continues to fascinate travelers from the world over. It can be explored either on foot or with volcanic all-terrain vehicles. Etna is a short day trip from the towns of Taormina and Catania, which is very convenient. And FYI – you can even ski near the summit in the winter.

It’s mind-boggling to me that I spent two months in Sicily and still missed almost half of the places in this post. For a little island, it sure has a LOT of must-see places. Great list! It looks like I’ll have to go back to Sicily and see some more (such a chore).
