Way back circa 1803, William Blake wrote: “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower; hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.” Now, we’re pretty sure he wasn’t referring to Serbia, which, at the time, was preparing for an uprising that would change the course of its already turbulent history.
Yet, we cannot shake the feeling that reciting these words while standing atop a lonely mountain peak in one of Serbia’s most treasured natural havens somehow beckons the same inexplicable, yet overpowering inspiration that Blake himself must have felt while compiling what would become the legendary “Auguries of Innocence.” Inspiration, therefore, is the key, ladies and gentlemen, when it comes to tourist attractions in Serbia.
From the fertile plains of Vojvodina to the surging peaks of the ominously-named Prokletije (“Damned Mountains”), and encapsulating every nook and cranny of the once vast and ancient Balkan forests in between, affectionately christened Šumadija (“The Great Forests”), the ever-enduring small country of great hospitality opens its doors to visitors from the world over. Home of the always outnumbered, but never outgunned, Serbia truly has so much to offer.
