This is a town that was once the capital of Greece, that is, until the role was passed on to Athens in 1834. Wealthy Athenians absolutely love this place, especially as a weekend destination. But, there’s plenty to see in Nafplio, especially since it’s not rare to hear this town being called the most beautiful city in all of Greece.
The towering churches and neo-classical mansions in the car-free old town are set against the backdrop of the formidable 18th century Palamidi Fortress.
Located on the east coast of the Peloponnese, on a small peninsula, it’s a convenient detour or excursion if you happen to be visiting the aforementioned no. 2 attraction on this list. If not – Nafplio is more than worth visiting all on its own.
