A fortified, now abandoned town situated in the midst of the legendary Sparta, Mystras was once the capital of the massive Byzantine Empire. Perhaps not something one would instinctively consider when looking for the best tourist attractions in Greece, it is definitely worth a visit.
Mystras, which thrived immensely during the 14th and 15th centuries, was constructed on a hill slope. This gives way for an astounding view of the city from a distance, not to mention that it is home to numerous ruins that date back to the medieval period.
