9. Lake Kariba, Zambia/Zimbabwe
Lake Kariba is the world’s largest artificial lake and reservoir by volume, which makes it worthy of being deemed one of the most magnificent lakes in Africa. It lies some 1,300 kilometers (808 miles) upstream from the Indian Ocean, along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The lake was created between 1958 and 1963, following the completion of the Kariba Dam at its northeastern end, thus flooding the Kariba Gorge on the Zambezi River. While there, you can visit the legendary Victoria Falls, go bungee jumping close to the “Smoke That Thunders” or connect with animals in the region, complete with a safari on an elephant’s back.
