9. The Frisian village of Hindeloopen
An atmospheric small town by the banks of the artificial freshwater lake Ijsselmeer, Hindeloopen is most famous for its traditional art and costume. Loads of maritime history, unique culture, tapered alleys, distinctive timber bridges, striking façades, tiny picturesque canals, waterfront and an old charm are what set Hindeloopen apart from any other destination in Holland.
The exquisitely pretty Frisian village of Hindeloopen was once a wealthy port and trading town. In 1368, the town became a part of the Hanseatic League— a defensive and commercial league of merchant guilds and their market towns. The 17th and 18th century witnessed golden times for this rich town when it not only developed its own costume but also got a unique look with brightly painted walls and furniture. Today, Hindeloopen is regarded as one of the top 10 most charming small towns in Holland.
