9. Chongqing
When talking about beautiful ancient little towns in China, one might ask why Chongqing deserves to be on the list. After all, it is the largest municipality in southwest China. However, it has a ton of interesting things to offer, which is why it’s more than worth exploring and taking your time doing it.
It’s a modern city on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Spanning 82,400 square kilometers (31,800 square miles), it borders the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Shaanxi. Known as the “Mountain City,” it has a wavy terrain and encompasses a wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests, and abundant flora and fauna.
