10 Hidden Gems in California You May Have Never Heard Of

6. Mark Twain’s Cabin

A little off the beaten path in Calaveras County, Sonora is where you’ll find this old cabin. Back in his day, Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) had hoped for this exactly. He stayed in this cabin after an incident in San Francisco where he had claimed that the city’s police department was corrupt.

He got the heck out of dodge and waited in this very cabin for things to cool down. Then, one day he went into town and saw a boy with a frog, which gave birth to “The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” The rest is history.
