6. The Monastery of Santa Catalina
Located in Arequipa, this whopping, ginormous monastery complex spans nearly 20,000 square meters. And that’s complete with its small squares, stairways, walkways, streets and walls. Predominantly of the Mudéjar style, this incredible man-made structure was built way back in 1580.
It is by far one of Peru’s and Latin America’s most important monasteries by any and all criteria. One thing we were particularly fond of, we must add, were the vividly painted walls, which somehow contrast everything you’d expect from a monastery complex (at least in our minds). As far as we’re concerned, this is one of the best places in Peru and a definite must-see.
