10 Awesome Castles to Visit in France

7. Chateau de Sully sur Loire

Sully-sur-Loire was built back in the 14th century and acted as a residence for the Duke of Sully in the 15th century. While the first origins of the site date back to the 1200s, its current appearance was perfected much later on.

During the 1700s when France was ravaged by a civil war, it was here where Cardinal Mazarin, who you might know from The Three Musketeers, sought refuge. In a sense, it is a much somber location compared to other lavish ones we’ve seen. Nonetheless, the Chateau de Sully sur Loire holds many sculptures, paintings, as well as tapestries, most of which date back from the 17th century.
