1. Chateau de Pierrefonds
Often thought as one of the most unusual castles in France, there are several specifics that are bound to impress all tourists if they have the chance to visit the Chateau de Pierrefonds. In spite of the fact that the original structure was constructed in the 12th century, following its destruction in the 17th century, it was uniquely restored.
Under the direction of Napoleon III, the famous architect Violet-le-Duc created a lavish reconstruction on the medieval basis of the building. This process resulted in a charming yet peculiar castle which exceptionally combines the elements of the Dark Ages and the lavish living style of some sovereign rulers.
