3. Pura Besakih
Bali’s highest mountain, Gunung Agund, has on its slopes Pura Besakih; the most important temple from the previously mentioned nine greatest temples. Collectively, they are known as the “kayangan jagat,” and it is believed they protect the island from evil. The temple complex has more than 28 buildings which stand on seven ascending terraces. There is a number of self-styled “guides” on the site itself, and it’s perhaps best to avoid such random encounters by joining a group tour.
