8. Gustavus
Surely it comes as no surprise that some of the most interesting places to visit in Alaska happen to be small towns. Although very close to Juneau, which is Alaska’s capital, Gustavus feels far, far away. The fact that it offers some of the most majestic and astonishing vistas in the whole of Alaska has to do with the fact that it’s completely surrounded by mountains. Each summer, a wave of tourists flocks to Gustavus, which actually has a low population of year-round residents. If you’re not in the mood for a ferry from Juneau, visiting this incredible small town can also be done via a small regional airport.
