This is one for the books, guys – Italy’s stunning enough as it is, but the Sicilian mountaintop town of Erice is well worth a visit just for the views. Half a mile below it is another city by the name of Trapani, with Erice sitting at the top of Mount Erice. Year-round crisp and cool temperatures make this town a real sanctuary during the summer months, and when you add to that the fact that it’s reachable by cable cars from Trapani, it really does appear heavenly. Two medieval castles are the stars of the show at this glorious city, one built by Britons, and the other by Arabs. So, let’s review: it sits on a mountaintop; it’s got not one, but two castles; it’s pleasant to stay in year-round; it’s in Italy and it gives astonishing views. What more do you need, seriously? If this isn’t the king of top tourist attractions in Sicily and Italy as a whole, we don’t know what city is.
